Okadaya read our lively discussion on LiveJournal back on 08/03/10 and responded directly to Nakama regarding her stance on scanlation. Her views were a lot different than we all thought simply because its NOT what we all thought. Her opinion on scanlation still stands but it is simply because it would be "irresponsible" of her to condone it when her work is not her own after Japanese publishers put her work out in tanko format. So apparently its not just an English licensing issue but a Japanese licensing issue, as well. Here is part of the email excerpt that she sent us and it clearly shows why Okadaya is one of a kind mangaka who doesn't shy away from her beliefs while graciously acknowledging scanlators attempts to promote their favorite mangaka. "First of all, let me express my appreciation towards your prompt attention to delete scanned work. I have no doubt that you enjoy my work and no intention to disturb my career. All the things you've done is to promote my work and let many international readers to know who is Okadaya and what sort of work she's done. However, even so, as you already know by reading my twitter I can not accept illegal scanning. I've told many reasons so far but simply, to sum up, main reasons are:1. it's illegal. Nobody but my contract publishers got the right to do that. even I don't have right to let you do that. now, this is the point. EVEN THE AUTHOR hasn't got right to let anybody to do scanlations without publisher's permission. If any author who encourage you guys to do that without legal permission means the author is OK with you guys to become criminals. And I believe that is most irresponsible attitude. 2. I'll go die for hunger eventually if I let my work spread free by scanning. You might wonder why. But haven't you ever seen someone upload the RAW stuff on the web? Japanese one. I had many times and these were downloaded in Japan and spread all over the country in a few second. Obviously sales went weak as many readers already got the scanned copies in their PC. So this is my theory according to the scanlation. You can put it on your website if you need. Well, though, I do understand how international readers feel (this I already told on Twitter as well) and I myself think it's the matter of course that they want to see the inside of the book so that they can judge if it worth to buy or not. Really, there's a thousand BL books which are gorgeous outside poor inside. We call it cover-gyp. So I wish if every publishers would let the reader to have a look at ...say at least first chapter in order to let them decide whether it's worth for the value or not. I'm now asking -------------------- about this...especially for the English reader and hope they will response it." So...she gets it. Which is pretty damn awesome to say the least.
